The triad.

By: Abby Rumsey

The HCC Triad website was really enjoyable. Getting to see the photographs, paintings, and digital art was really interesting. I never would have seen these without the website. Also publishing the writings and artwork would definitely boost confidence to the writers and artists. I was very impressed with the level of artwork that was displayed on the page. As far as the website goes, it seemed like it could use some work; it is very plain and although I like the simple, clean look it could use some work. The tabs were very helpful and they were a great aid in navigating through the webpage. I enjoyed using the easy set up. I am glad HCC has set up a web page to display and show off their students work. This website will definitely be a benefit to the school and its students.

‘Viva Las Vegas’

Spending the weekend in Vegas definitely changed my opinion on the city and the people who reside there. My aunt, a fashion designer, has lived there for the past couple of years and was able to show me that Vegas is more than glitz and glamour. No doubt, walking down the strip, seeing the extravagant motels and casinos was a blast but that is not where the beauty of Vegas lives. About 30 minutes outside of the city sits Red Rock Canyon State Park. In the park sits a phenomenal, natural optical illusion. These massive rocks that appear small and menial, hold views are almost too much to take in at once. If you are going to visit Las Vegas, enjoy the casinos and night life but make a point to visit some of the natural beauties that are surrounding you.

Facebook: Good for College Students?

The effects of social networking on a college student’s life are undeniable. There is no doubt that students are spending more and more time on the many different social networks and less time studying. With the scale tipping the wrong way, grade are sure to drop.

A social networking site is any type of web service that allows you to interact with another person. Whether you are contacting a person right beside you or a person on the other side of the earth, social networks have made communication easy and accessible. But with everything good things comes something bad.  Their downside is that tiny fact that they are addicting. Being able to update your friends on what you are doing have become the new ‘it’ thing. People are spending hours upon hours with their Internet relationships and less and less time on their face-to-face relationships.

When a students logs onto their computer, their first thought might not be Facebook but its not far from their mind. As they bring up their web browser they may start out with the right intention, search for the needed facts, collect data, and compile it together. But as they search drags on, they become bored and tired of reading the same facts. Their mind slowly starts to drift as they begin to wonder what their friends are up to. So they begin to flirt with the idea of checking out their Facebook. They begin to rationalize, five minutes on Facebook and thirty minutes on their assignment. But as the day wears on, they begin to loose momentum and they drift more and more towards Facebook, its soon turns into thirty minutes of Facebook and five minutes of assignment. And before they know it they have completely dropped their studies and have moved their focus completely to Facebook. Although the steps may change they will result in the same ending. Facebook.

Since computers have become a necessity for college students, they are battling their dual purposes. Not only are students using their computer for research and papers but also for entertainment. That is making the temptation even stronger. Everyday we are discovering new ways to improve and enhance the ways we stay connected. With the invention of the smart phone, students are able to access their web accounts from almost anywhere. You no longer have to be near a hot spot so accessing a social network is easier and the temptation can be pretty strong. Now that temptation follows you everywhere. This would not have been a problem before 2004 because social networks did not have a high popularity rating then.

With social networks gaining popularity, students are exchanging studying for networking. One of the main social networking sites is Facebook. Facebook was originally targeted at college and university students but in 2004 they opened this addiction to high school students. In 2009, a study was done that showed Facebook users GPAs were around a 3.0 while non-Facebook users GPAs were around 4.0. Facebook users have flopped the amount of time they should be studying with the amount of time they spend on Facebook. It was reported that those who do not have a Facebook study more than twice as much as those who have a Facebook.

No doubt, social networks have their benefits but their benefits come in moderation. If students would discipline themselves or if there was a setting to limit the amount of time they spend on Facebook, grades would have a chance to improve. Sure there would be endless complaints but the students would be forced to focus their time and energy somewhere else, hopefully their grades.
